St Kilda Are Far Too Precious
May 16th 2008 14:09
St Kilda fans can be very disappointed in their team's performance against the Magpies on Friday night. While they were still running hard (albeit slow) in the final quarter, and still had a sniff with just a minute or two to go, they were repeatedly soft when it came to one-on-one contests and pressure situations.
How often during the evening did a St Kilda player stop before the contest was over to look at the umpire or play for a free kick? How many times did we have to see a Saint take ages to get up without a hint of a second effort?
In contrast, when Alan Didak was ridden into the fence in the last quarter, it appeared as though he had injured his ankle. Instead of making anything of it though, he got up, took his kick and played on.
The Saints could learn from Collingwood, who displayed good body strength and were prepared to give away the odd free kick in doing so. Especially if the Saint was hamming it up for the umpire's viewing.
The word 'precious' crossed my mind countless times during the game. It was as if St Kilda thought a hard tackle should be a free kick because it could cause an injury. Or that laying one tackle was excuse enough to take a breather.
What infuriated me the most was how many St Kilda players managed to maintain smart, trendy haircuts up until the final siren!
There is a problem down at Moorabbin which will only be fixed by helping each other. Carlton has their own system, in the form of their 'Harden the --- Up' bands for soft performances. If that's what it takes, let St Kilda adopt the same system.
After tonight, they'd be out of stock.
