Fakin' It
April 21st 2008 13:04
There has been much skepticism surrounding the closing stages of Sunday's Bulldogs-Tigers match. With under a minute to go, Bulldogs full back Brian Lake took a mighty pack mark in the forwardline, before rising from the ground clutching at his leg. He was taken from the ground, leaving the kick to be taken by someone - anyone - else. Preferably not a defender.
Was he faking it? The answer to that is almost certainly yes. Here's why.
It's pretty simple, really: with literally anyone else a better option, and the siren to sound at any second, it was the 'team thing to do'. The nearest teammate, Will Minson, is by no means someone you would put your life on kicking a goal, but he's a hell of a lot more preferable to Lake. I know all this because I would do the exact same thing.
The Bulldogs haven't officially commented yet, but they say Lake is going to have an ultrasound, and possibly scans if the injury proved particularly serious. Even if the Bulldogs have the scans done (which they won't), seeing Lake play next week (which he will) will all but prove his injury to be a charade.
Richmond, understandably, have already made no secret of their skepticism. Terry Wallace and Nathan Brown have already come out publically expressing their belief that Lake was not truly injured.
And I don't think anyone disagrees with them.
